Elden Ring Scaling & AR Guide
In Elden Ring, a weapon’s Attack Rating (AR) is the sum of its base damage and all scaling bonuses from your character’s attributes. Understanding scaling grades and soft caps is essential for maximising your weapon’s output.

E

Soft Caps Explained
Every scaling stat has soft caps — points where additional investment provides diminishing returns. Strength and Dexterity have soft caps at approximately 20 and 55. Intelligence and Faith soft-cap around 45 and 60. Investing heavily beyond these points provides minimal AR gain per level.
“Seek the scaling that matches your calling, Tarnished. A sorcerer who swings an axe earns but half the power of one who brandishes a staff.”
The most efficient weapon for S-tier scaling depends on your build: Rivers of Blood and Nagakiba for Arcane bleed builds, Dark Moon Greatsword for INT builds (S scaling), Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear for Arcane faith builds, and Malenia’s blade for pure DEX. For STR, Greatsword and Starscourge Greatsword excel.
Two-handing multiplies your effective Strength by 1.5 for the purpose of meeting stat requirements and calculating STR scaling bonuses. If your Strength is 40, two-handing makes you count as having 60 STR for scaling. This significantly increases AR on STR-scaling weapons and allows you to use heavier weapons with lower STR investment.
Using a weapon without meeting its stat requirements (not counting towards two-hand) results in a major damage penalty — approximately 40% damage reduction. All scaling bonuses are also lost. Additionally, some animations become much slower. Always check minimum requirements before investing in a weapon’s upgrade path.
