Honing is the primary gear progression system in Lost Ark. Each honing attempt has a base success rate that decreases at higher item levels and increases with Artisan Energy (pity system). Failed attempts reduce the cost of the next attempt, and using stronghold research and books can significantly improve success rates.

Artisan Energy is a pity system that fills with each failed honing attempt. Each failed attempt adds a percentage based on the base success rate. Once Artisan Energy reaches 100%, the next honing attempt is guaranteed to succeed. This ensures that no matter how unlucky you are, there is always a hard cap on how many attempts a single honing upgrade can take.
