Real-Life Asphalt Estimator Examples
Calculation: Volume = 1,000 sq ft × (2.5/12) ft = 208.3 cubic ft × 145 lbs/ft³ = 30,208 lbs ÷ 2000 = 15.1 tons. With 8% compaction: 16.3 tons. Cost at $120/ton = $1,956.
Calculation: 20,000 × (4/12) = 6,667 cu ft × 145 = 966,667 lbs ÷ 2000 = 483 tons. With 8% compaction: 522 tons. Cost at $110/ton = $57,420.
Calculation: 800 × (1.5/12) = 100 cu ft × 145 = 14,500 lbs ÷ 2000 = 7.25 tons. With 5% compaction: 7.6 tons. Cost at $130/ton = $988.
Asphalt Thickness Recommendations by Project
- Residential Driveway: 2-3 inches of compacted asphalt over 6-8 inches of base gravel. Light duty (cars, SUVs) = 2 inches. Heavy vehicles (RVs, trucks) = 3-4 inches.
- Parking Lot (cars only): 3 inches asphalt over 6 inches base. For truck traffic: 4-5 inches asphalt.
- Residential Street: 4-5 inches asphalt over 8-10 inches base.
- Commercial Road: 6-8 inches asphalt (multiple lifts).
- Pathway / Walkway: 1.5-2 inches over compacted base.
- Overlay (resurfacing): 1.5-2 inches over existing pavement in good condition.
Asphalt Density & Weight Guide
- Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) typical density: 140-150 lbs per cubic foot (2,240-2,400 lbs per cubic yard)
- Per square yard per inch: Approximately 110-120 lbs. A 1″ thick, 1 sq yd area = ~115 lbs.
- Per square foot per inch: Approximately 12-13 lbs.
- One ton covers: ~80 sq ft at 2″ thick, ~65 sq ft at 2.5″, ~53 sq ft at 3″, ~40 sq ft at 4″.

- Low-end (rural, off-season): $75-100 per ton

Compaction Factor Explained
Asphalt compacts 5-10% when rolled. A 2.5″ loose thickness compacts to about 2.3″ final. Always order 5-10% extra material to ensure adequate coverage.
