Popular Pokémon Breeding Combinations
Strategy: Use Destiny Knot (passes 5 IVs from parents) and Everstone (passes Nature). Breed two 5-6 IV parents. Without Destiny Knot, only 3 IVs pass. With 6 IV Ditto + 5 IV target, ~1/32 chance for 6 IV offspring.
Odds: Base 1/4096. Masuda Method (different language parents): 1/683 (Gen 8+) or 1/512 with Shiny Charm. Best odds in franchise history! Shiny Charm requires completing Pokédex.
Inheritance: Female has 60% chance to pass HA (or male with Ditto). Always breed HA parent with Ditto for best results. Cannot get HA from non-HA parents.

Breeding Mechanics by Generation
- Scarlet & Violet (Gen 9): Picnics instead of Day Care. Sandwiches increase egg rate. Mirror Herb for egg moves. Destiny Knot + Everstone still work.
- Sword & Shield (Gen 8): Day Care at Route 5 and Wild Area. Egg moves transfer between same species in Day Care.
- Sun/Moon & Ultra (Gen 7): Paniola Ranch breeding. Pelago for AFK hatching. Same mechanics as Gen 6.
- X/Y & ORAS (Gen 6): First generation with boosted Masuda odds (1/512 with Shiny Charm). Lumiose City loop for hatching.
- Older Gens (3-5): Lower shiny odds (1/8192), fewer breeding mechanics.
Essential Breeding Items
- Destiny Knot: Parent passes 5 IVs instead of 3. MANDATORY for competitive breeding.
- Everstone: Passes down Nature. Always give to the parent with desired Nature.
- Power Items (Anklet, Band, etc.): Guarantee specific IV from parent. Useful for initial breeding.
- Mirror Herb (Gen 9): Learn Egg Moves without breeding — hold while picnicking.
- Oval Charm: Increases egg production rate. Post-game reward for completing Pokédex.
- Shiny Charm: 3x shiny odds. Complete regional Pokédex to obtain.
IV Breeding Math
Without Destiny Knot: 3 random IVs from parents, 3 random. Chance of 6 IV from two 6 IV parents: 1/32,768 (very low).
With Destiny Knot: 5 IVs inherited randomly from parents, 1 random. Chance of 6 IV from two 6 IV parents: 1/32 (3.125%).
With 6 IV Ditto + 5 IV target: ~1/192 chance for 6 IV offspring. Best method for beginners.
Pro Breeding Tips
- Get a 6 IV Ditto: Trade online or from Pokémon HOME. Makes ALL breeding easier.
- Use Everstone early: Lock in good Nature first, then breed for IVs.
- Chain breed for Egg Moves: Some moves require 2-3 generations to transfer.
- Patch of grass + Flame Body: Have a Pokémon with Flame Body (Magmar, Talonflame, Coalossal) to hatch eggs 2x faster.
- Breed during events: Increased shiny odds during mass outbreaks in Gen 9.
