BC Calculus AP Exam: Scoring Guide
AP Calculus BC is the most advanced calculus course in the AP programme, covering the full Calculus AB curriculum plus parametric and polar functions, sequences and series, and advanced integration techniques. Its scoring structure mirrors Calculus AB — two 50% sections — but the composite scale and cut scores are calibrated to a test-taking population that self-selects for strong mathematical ability, resulting in one of the highest 5-rates of any AP exam.
Having taught AP Calculus BC for eleven years and reviewed student FRQ responses against College Board rubrics across multiple exam cycles, I’ll explain exactly how the BC Calculus AP score calculator above generates your prediction.
BC-Only Topics That Appear on the Exam
Sequences & Series
BC ONLY
Convergence tests, Taylor & Maclaurin series, power series, radius/interval of convergence
Parametric Equations
BC ONLY
Arc length, derivatives of parametric curves, motion along a parametric path
Polar Functions
BC ONLY
Area in polar coordinates, derivatives of polar curves, converting between systems
Advanced Integration
BC ONLY
Integration by parts, partial fraction decomposition, improper integrals
Euler’s Method
BC ONLY
Numerical approximation of differential equation solutions using Euler’s method
∫ Strategy Note: On the FRQ section, show all mathematical setup and work — partial credit is available for correct process even if the final numerical answer is wrong. A misplaced negative sign that propagates through otherwise correct work typically loses only 1 of 9 FRQ points.
Approximately 38–43% of AP Calculus BC students score a 5 each year — one of the highest 5-rates of any AP exam. This reflects strong student self-selection into the course. The overall pass rate (score 3+) is 70–76%.
If you’re comfortable with precalculus and planning a STEM major, BC Calculus is almost always the better choice. Students who score 3+ on BC automatically receive AB subscore credit — effectively two credits for one exam. The additional BC topics (series, parametric, polar) also build foundations essential for college calculus courses.
BC-only topics include: sequences and series (all convergence tests, Taylor and Maclaurin series, power series), parametric equations and derivatives, polar coordinates and polar area calculations, integration by parts and partial fractions, improper integrals, Euler’s method, and logistic growth models.
The AP Calculus BC exam is approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes: Section I (MCQ) is 105 minutes with Part A (30 questions, no calculator, 60 min) and Part B (15 questions, calculator permitted, 45 min). Section II (FRQ) is also 105 minutes with Part A (2 FRQs, calculator permitted, 30 min) and Part B (4 FRQs, no calculator, 75 min).
