SHSAT Score Guide

The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) is the single criterion for admission to eight of New York City’s nine specialized high schools, including Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech. Each year, cutoff scores shift based on test difficulty and the number of seats available, making accurate score prediction critical for students planning their applications.

SHSAT Score Scale

The SHSAT is scored on a scale of 200–800. Raw scores (number of correct answers in each section) are converted to scaled scores through a process called equating, which adjusts for slight differences in difficulty between test forms. The calculator above uses a linear approximation of this conversion (accurate within ±15 points).

Recent Approximate Cutoff Scores

Stuyvesant consistently has the highest cutoff (~560–590), Brooklyn Latin the lowest (~520–540). Cutoffs fluctuate 15–30 points year to year. A scaled score of 550+ is competitive for most specialized high schools; 580+ is competitive for Stuyvesant.

📚 SHSAT Strategy: Math typically has a higher ceiling for score gains through preparation. ELA requires extensive reading practice months before the exam. Practice timed, full-length tests to build stamina — the SHSAT is 3 hours long.

Frequently Asked Questions

The SHSAT has 114 questions total — 57 ELA and 57 Math. There is no penalty for wrong answers. Raw scores are converted to a scaled score of 200–800 through equating. Stuyvesant High School typically requires the highest score, while Brooklyn Latin usually has the lowest cutoff among the eight SHSAT schools.
The SHSAT is offered in late October and early November for 8th grade students (and 9th graders applying to Staten Island Technical High School). Students in 8th grade apply to the eight SHSAT schools for 9th grade entry. Registration opens through NYC DOE in September.
This calculator uses a linear approximation of the SHSAT raw-to-scaled score conversion. Results are typically accurate within ±15–25 scaled score points. The exact conversion table used by NYC DOE varies by test form and is not publicly released. Use this as an estimate, not a definitive score.
